For this three week long internship I had the awesome opportunity of shadowing multiple doctors, nurses, and surgeons at Mercy Regional Medical Center. BUSINESS DESCRIPTION Mercy Regional Medical Center is one of the biggest hospitals in the South West Region. People come here all over the US for the best medical care. INTERNSHIP SUMMARY For the last three weeks I interned at Mercy Regional Medical Center with Amber DeHerrera, a TCU and volunteer travel nurse, as my mentor. Throughout this amazing internship, I had the opportunity to see almost all departments of the hospital. I was able to shadow not only my mentor, Amber, but also a few other doctors, surgeons, and nurses. Being in TCU with Amber was mostly patient care, checking vitals, and making sure they were getting their medication. I also shadowed an RN in OB, the Family Birthing Center, which had to be favorite. That day I was able to see a vaginal delivery and it was probably the most amazing thing I've ever witnessed. Later that week, OB put me on schedule to scrub in for a C-section which was insane to watch because the surgeons literally pull the uterus out of the body to close up. One of my first few days of being at Mercy, I was invited to the Cath Lab where I watched cardiologists perform a cardiac catheterization and this was awesome. They inserted a catheter into the patients radial artery and threaded it to his heart where the catheter released dye; from the monitor room I could see x-rays of his coronary arteries and how they pump blood. A couple of days after that I was invited to spend a day with a paramedic who also specialized in reading EKG monitors; I learned the basics in reading one and it morphed my knowledge and the way I look at a monitor when checking vitals! I was also set up to spend a few days with my family doctor who specializes in infectious disease. The patients and what we were working with was definitely a big change compared to the other people I shadowed. This doctor also introduced me to a plastic surgeon who currently works with wound care and amputations but spent half of his earlier life doing cosmetic procedures only, which was awesome to hear about! PREPARATION Preparing for this internship was a challenge -- I started planning last minute which made the before process more stressful than it should have been. After contacting many doctors/ nurses in the medical profession, I was able to get my parents' doctor, an infectious disease specialist, to mentor me. A couple of days before the internship started, Janae came to me with another possible mentor who is a travel nurse which is a big interest of mine. I ended up taking Amber, the travel nurse, up on her offer and also shadowed the infectious disease doctor. Thanks to Amber, Dr. Rupp, and many other nurses, doctors, and surgeons, I was able to to have an amazing experience by seeing almost all departments of the hospital. My goal for this internship was figuring out my interest and once I realized how much this field excites me, I hoped to leave a mark on the staff there and remind them of what made them fall in love with this field and how much they truly impact society with all of their help.
